And on Wednesday, the recalls expanded to include specific lots of 16-ounce frozen Meijer Organics Chopped Spinach distributed to warehouses in Ohio, recalled by Twin City Foods, Inc. of Stanwood, Washington. And specific lots of another product, Simply Balanced 10-ounce Frozen Organic Chopped Spinach, distributed exclusively at Target stores nationwide, also joined the list of recalled products via an FDA notice on Wednesday.
Those products joined those frozen dishes recalled Monday by California-based Amy’s Kitchen, which voluntarily recalled specified lots of vegetable lasagna, spinach pizza, and Enchilada Verde.
The recalls were based on a notice from an organic spinach supplier that a lab test showed the presence in its product of Listeria, a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to a release posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration web site.
A Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, FDA officials said.
The companies involved told the FDA they were not aware of any complaints of illness related to the recalled products.
The recalled Amy’s Kitchen products were distributed to stores nationwide in the United States and in Canada, and Kroger officials said on the company web site’s recalls page that the Dayton-Cincinnati region’s Kroger stores sold the Amy’s Kitchen products. Dorothy Lane Market also included the recall on its web site.
Some grocers with loyalty cards that allow for the tracking of individual purchases were notifying customers who bought the recalled products. Go to www.fda.gov for a full list of the recalls and of the recalled products.
