In 2010, 78 percent of credit unions offered free standalone accounts, Bankrate.com said in a survey released this month.
If credit union customers use direct deposit, e-statements and meet minimum transaction activity requirements, those things can eliminate fees at 96 percent of credit unions, Bankrate.com said.
By comparison, Bankrate.com said 39 percent of banks have free checking accounts, compared to 65 percent of banks in 2010.
