Researchers evaluated 2,740 short-term, non-federal, acute care U.S. hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of patients to compile the Top 100 list, according to Truven, which said hospitals do not apply for awards, and winners are not required to pay to market the results of the study.

The Top 100 had the highest composite scores of 11 measures in seven categories, including: inpatient outcomes, process of care, extended outcomes, process efficiency, cost efficiency, financial health, and patient experience. Truven used Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to determine the rankings.
The study has been conducted annually since 1993 and is considered one of the most comprehensive, academically driven studies of its kind.
