5 things to know about the grand opening of local Macy’s outlet store

Macy’s will open its first Dayton-area outlet store concept next month.

Macy’s is renovating its existing stores at the Dayton Mall to add a Backstage outlet store. It is set to open on June 2. The permit indicates the project is a partial building alteration to make space for a 1,300-square-foot Macy’s Backstage outlet. A building permit valued the renovation work at about $75,000.

Here’s what else you need to know about the Backstage concept:

1. What is the Backstage concept?

The department store chain has invested in its off-price concept, called Macy’s Backstage. The company added 11 new Backstage stores within existing Macy’s stores in the first quarter of 2017. The stores, similar to Nordstrom Rack, offer discounted prices on brand clothing up to 80 percent off. Macy’s has ambitious growth plans for Backstage and said earlier this year that it will open 100 more Backstage stores in 2018.

2. Where else are the stores?

The chain is opening other stores in Ohio, including one that is open at the Tri-County Mall in Cincinnati. The chain also has outlets in Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.

By the end of June, the state of Ohio will have a total of 6 Backstage locations in the following markets: Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton and Toledo.

3. Are there any special sales on opening day?

The grand opening on June 2 will include giveaways for the first 200 customers and special events throughout the day.

4. How else is Macy’s expanding in Ohio?

Macy’s plans to build a new 400-employee distribution center near Columbus to cater to these outlet stores in Ohio, creating more than 400 jobs. There were 10 additional people hired to work at Backstage’s Dayton Mall location.

5. What kind of clothes and items will customers see at Backstage?

There are different buying teams for Backstage and for Macy’s larger stores, so they have different items for sale. Backstage doesn’t use coupons or have sales, but is marketed as having prices that don’t require waiting for a sale. Check out some of the items you might be able to buy:
