This Halloween, avoid a shopping nightmare

Billions of dollars is spent each year on Halloween items from costumes to candy to decorations. To prepare for Beggar’s night, you need to be careful where you shop as you prepare for Beggar’s night. No matter if you’re shopping at seasonal, temporary and online stores know the return policies. Your Better Business Bureau suggests you do your homework to avoid a Halloween shopping nightmare.

This Halloween, about $7 billion will be spent on candy, pumpkins, decorations and costumes according to the National Retail Federation. Americans are expected to spend $2.2 billion on Halloween costumes alone. On average, a consumer will spend about $72 total on Halloween-related items, with about $26 per costume and $21 for candy.

To avoid being tricked this Halloween, your BBB offers these helpful tips:

• Watch out for too-good-to-be-true deals.

• Do your research. Many Halloween stores are run by reputable retailers, taking advantage of short-term leases on vacant space to set up temporary stores. On the other hand, some seasonal businesses change their name year to year as a way of disguising poor track records.

• Check refund and return policies. Many stores will allow specific or no returns on seasonal items. Find out if store will be around after the holiday. If the store will close after the holiday, be sure the item you purchase is what you want and don’t need to return.

• Look for secure websites when shopping online. Look for a website with the padlock on the page and “https” in the URL web address box. Also, look for trustmarks on websites like your BBB’s seal.

• Pay by credit card. If something goes wrong, you may be able to dispute the charges with your credit card company.

• Get details when renting a costume. Find out the store’s policy if the costume is damaged or lost. Make sure you understand the rental agreement before signing.

Remember, safety on Halloween should be your top priority. The National Safety Council says be sure an adult accompanies children, drive safe and be alert of kids around cars, inspect your candy and don’t let children enter homes without adult supervision. Also, make sure children’s costumes are made with flame retardant material.
