Two local hospitals almost paperless with medical records

DAYTON — Miami Valley and Good Samaritan hospitals, both part of Premier Health Partners, are among 2.5 percent of more than 5,000 hospitals nationwide that have reached at least the sixth stage in adopting electronic medical records, according to HIMSS Analytics.

Reaching Stage 6 means hospitals have almost fully gone “paperless” with their medical records in most inpatient care settings.

Such hospitals also have advanced their information technology capabilities to the point that they can address:

• meaningful use criteria in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act;

• claims attachments for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act;

• pay for performance;

• government quality reporting programs.

Miami Valley and Good Samaritan hospitals are among 127 hospitals that have reached Stage 6, while 39 hospitals have reached Stage 7, according to the HIMSS Analytics’ website. In Stage 7 hospitals, staff no longer use paper charts to deliver and manage patient care.

HIMSS Analytics developed the electronic medical record adoption model in 2005 to evaluate the progress and impact of the implementation of electronic medical records systems by hospitals.
