Vacant Kettering building back in business

KETTERING — A 20,000-square-foot building that has been vacant since Pep Boys closed more than four years ago has sprung back to life as a roofing and home-improvement supply company.

R&M Roofing Supply Inc. opened last week at 3022 Wilmington Pike just south of Dorothy Lane. It is owned by and husband-and-wife team of Mike Wellmeier and Ruth Chandler of Bellbrook.

Wellmeier said he worked for 12 years as a roofing contractor and had difficulty obtaining the right supplies and equipment at the right times — and decided to do something about it. He liked the central location and high traffic of the Wilmington Pike location, just south of a busy intersection that recently was rebuilt and improved.

City officials welcomed the economic activity in a building that has stood empty since early 2008.

“It’s an encouraging sign to see a large vacant building put back into use on the Wilmington Pike corridor,” said Kettering Economic Development Manager Gregg Gorsuch.

In addition to roofing supplies, R&M carries siding, windows, doors, kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets and contractor tools.

R&M Roofing employs 10 and is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The company has a 24-hour on-call service to assist customers outside of store hours, Wellmeier said.
