Vectren’s Nest thermostat study finds ‘significant’ savings

Vectren Energy Delivery has completed a smart thermostat pilot program with Nest, the results of which were included in a whitepaper about energy bill analysis performed by Nest Labs Inc., according to a media release.

Vectren officials said the study was designed to assess the energy savings of the “smart” thermostat over standard, programmable models.

Vectren designed, funded and conducted the program that started in fall 2013. The company replaced manual thermostats in 600 homes, installing Nest thermostats in 300 homes and standard, programmable thermostats in 300 homes, and hired a third-party to evaluate the program.

The Nest customers saved more than twice as much heating energy in the winter compared to the standard programmable thermostat customers, a “statistically significant” difference, officials said.

Vectren’s rebate program for 2015 now includes a $100 rebate toward a Wi-Fi enabled programmable thermostat, such as those offered by Nest. For more information, visit vectren.com/saveenergy.
