WellPoint completes acquisition of Amerigroup

Health insurer WellPoint Inc. said Monday the acquisition of Amerigroup Corp., the managed care health company, is complete.

WellPoint is the parent company of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio, and first announced in July plans to buy Virginia Beach, Va.-based Amerigroup to better serve Medicaid participants. Indianapolis, Ind.-based WellPoint Inc. valued the deal to buy Amerigroup at about $4.9 billion.

Anthem has about 800,000 members in the Cincinnati-Dayton region and about 3,500 employees. Its main Ohio offices are in Deerfield Twp. in Warren County.

The deal makes Amerigroup a subsidiary of WellPoint to serve Medicaid patients of both companies.
