Workspace spotlight: Oakwood business describes its success

Nina Anglin and Mimi Combs, co-owners of the Oakwood Florist, recently sat down with the Dayton Daily News to discuss their business.

Describe your company: Oakwood Florist is a full service florist, offering Teleflora with access to thousands of florists worldwide and online ordering 24/7. We offer flowers and gifts for all occasions from personal to corporate needs. We also customize programs for funerals, weddings and those in nursing homes. Oakwood florist also offers gardening and landscaping services.

When was the company founded and how did it get started: Oakwood Florist has been in business in Oakwood since 1950.

How many employees: Mimi Combs and Nina Anglin, a mother and daughter team, purchased the Oakwood Florist in 2004 and has six employees in addition to the owners.

How has the company grown: We have added a lot of business accounts, restaurant accounts,weddings, events,and new customers.

Describe your job: Nina: I work at keeping our name out in the community through Oakwood Rotary, Kettering Oakwood Moraine areas, Women in Business Networking, Clothes that Works and other networking groups.

Mimi: I am involved in all aspects of the day to day operations from taking orders, designing, delivery, wedding coordination, designer and set up.

What's unique about your workspace: It's small and very efficient. The building once housed an ice cream parlor and we have the original ice cream walk in cooler from the 1950 and it still works for us.

What is the one thing in your workspace you can't work without? Mimi: My knife Nina: My iPad and cell phone

What's your secret to success? First and foremost customer service. We would like to thank our customers. Without them we wouldn't be where we are today. And we love what we do, working with our customers and community.
