Man charged in Fairborn police shooting makes first court appearance

UPDATE @ 4:04 p.m.:

A man accused of shooting a Fairborn police officer in the arm made his first court appearance via video Wednesday afternoon.

A Fairborn Municipal Court judge told Luke D. Easterday that his case will be presented to a grand jury next Wednesday.

She then set his bond at $750,000.

News Center 7 attempted to reach out to others at Easterday’s Archer Drive home, but they declined to comment.

An 18-year-old man has been charged in the shooting of a Fairborn police officer.

Luke D. Easterday is facing attempted aggravated murder and felonious assault charges, according to police.

He is being held in the Fairborn Jail.

UPDATE @ 12:58 p.m.:

The Fairborn police officer shot in the arm at an Archer Drive house early Wednesday morning has been released from the hospital.

Sgt. Bill Titley, a 21-year veteran of the department, responded to a report of shots fired at an apartment complex earlier that morning and was following up at the suspect’s last known address when he was shot, according to police.

The suspect reportedly fired  a single round from an upstairs window.

Titley was taken to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment, but has since been released and is recovering.

Officers took the suspect into custody after a seven-hour standoff.

Police have not yet identified the suspect and formal charges are pending.

More information is expected to be released today.

UPDATE @ 9:41 a.m.:

A man who lives at the house police surrounded for more than seven hours this morning is in custody, according to jail and online court records.

Luke D. Easterday, 18, was arrested by Fairborn police at 4:45 a.m. and booked into the Fairborn City Jail at 5:11 a.m., online records show.

We’re working to confirm with police Easterday’s involvement in this morning’s incident.

Formal charges for Easterday have not been filed with the court, a court clerk said.

INITIAL REPORT:

The officer was shot at a home in the 200 block of Archer Drive when someone in the house fired shots as he and other officers approached. The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries, said Sgt. Mark Stannard, a Fairborn police spokesman.

The officer, who has not been identified, was taken to a local hospital, Stannard said. The officer was struck in the arm, according to scanner traffic, but Stannard declined to confirmed that information.

The incident started just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday as officers were responding to a report of shots fired at the home, Stannard said. As officers were approaching the house, someone inside fired at them, striking the officer, Stannard said.

Just before midnight, Fairborn police put out a call for all available officers in the area to respond when the suspect refused to come out of the house. Greene County Sheriff’s deputies and officers from neighboring communities arrived at the scene a short time later.

An emergency response team whose members are wearing body armor was also on the scene, and were attempting to get the suspect to come out.

About 2:30 a.m. police shot tear gas into the home, and entered about 5 a.m., taking the suspect into custody, Stannard said, noting that there were no additional injuries.

Police have not released the suspect’s identify, nor have they said what charges he will face.
