The Food Frolic for kids may not be as impromptu as a food fight in the cafeteria, but it’s more enriching.

A scheduled Food Frolic in the Dayton Art Institute’s Experiencenter will be held Saturday.

This food won’t end up in children’s hair; it will be transformed into tasteful, and tasty, artwork. The kids can then thoroughly enjoy their creations by eating them.

“There will be three edible art projects inspired by artwork at the DAI, including Kandinsky Condiment Wraps, Edible Self-Portraits and Sticky Sculptures,” said Alexandra Otte, youth and family programs coordinator. “Come hungry and creative, and have a little fun with your food.”

At this Food Frolic, they will be collecting nonperishable food items for the Foodbank Dayton. Super Saturday Family Days are scheduled on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.

Here are a few that have been planned to date:

June 14: Father's Day Fun: At this event, kids can have fun while doing something practical. Their make-and-take artwork at this event can double as a unique gift for daddies and other special men in their lives.

June 28: Happy Birthday USA! With the founding of our great nation right around the corner, this day will celebrate the USA with patriotic artwork.

July 12: Glass Bash: Contemporary glass art by Dale Chihuly is celebrated at the Dayton Art Institute, with many works presented in the Eileen Dicke Gallery of Glass in the Dicke Wing of American Art. Children can touch a real Chihuly artwork and be inspired to create their own artwork.

July 19: Deck It Out: Kids always like to play dress-up. The museum invites children to come dressed in a wacky costume. Activities include the creation of accessories for those costumes to make them even more over-the-top.

Aug. 23: Back to School: Daily fun in the sun is almost over, and it's time to look forward to school starting again. Activities for this Super Saturday include creating a backpack organizer and other fun projects that will help kids when they're back in the classroom.
