New sports bar coming to Kettering

The former Starlite Diner at 4090 Wilmington Pike in Kettering, which has been vacant since January, will open this summer as Sidelines Grill, its owner, Mark Ewart, said Tuesday.

Sidelines Grill is the second sports bar-restaurant venture by Ewart, a Kettering resident who also owns Bankshots sports bar in Trotwood. Ewart said the success of Bankshots prompted him to look for a second location.

The new sports bar could open as early as Aug. 1, Ewart said. It will employ 15 to 20 people. Plans call for building a deck for patio seating, he said.

The sports bar and restaurant will have about 15 large-screen televisions and two pool tables, Ewart said. Its signature menu items will include chicken wings, cheesesteak and a 10-ounce pork chop, the pub’s owner said.

Ewart signed a five-year lease on the building which previously housed a Perkins restaurant prior to becoming Starlite Diner. Starlite closed its Wilmington Pike location in January.

Renovations have begun on another vacant bar-restaurant virtually across the street from the future Sidelines Grill — the former Crocodile Louie’s/Grindstone Charley’s at 4139 Wilmington Pike — which will become an El Rancho Grande. That restaurant also is projected to open in August.
