Amber Rose is located at 1400 Valley Street in Dayton and specializes in German, Lithuanian, Polish, Hungarian, Russian and Italian dishes.
Employee Jeri Rosenkranz says the schnitzel is popular, but isn’t the only thing that draws customers into the restaurant that Elinor Sluzas opened in 1990.
“We are famous for our cabbage rolls,” she said.
We started with the restaurant’s tangy sauerkraut balls on a recent visit.
On the suggestion of our waitress Amiee, we ordered schnitzel and one of two sampler plates on the dinner menu.
The eastern European comfort food did the trick.
The Warsaw Medley ($17.99) includes some of the stars of the menu — homemade sausage, tangy sauerkraut, potato pierogies and of course a cabbage rolls.
The Hunter Schnitzel, described on the menu as a “new twist on pork,” came smoothered in dijon cream sauce and accompanied by sauerkraut and crispy petite potato pancakes ($15.99).
Other menu items includes knockwurst & bratwurst ($13.99), turtle soup ($3.99 a cup or $4.99 for a bowl), herring ($4.99) Russian beef stroganoff ($16.29) and Hungarian chicken paprikas ($15.99.)
The resturant’s bar is made of imported Turkish marble. It serves a relatively small selection of imported beer. We tried the Paulaner Hefe-Weissbier, one of Amiee’s favorites ($4.25).
Now owned by Joe Canstellano, Amber Rose is gearing up for its Mother’s Day brunch buffett . Menu items include a carved ham and turkey, cabbage rolls, chicken and dumplings, potato pancakes, schnitzel sliders and several other items.
The price is $23.95 for adults and $9.99 for children younger than age 12.
