Looking for a good laugh? Stars from the popular ’90s comedy series “Mystery Science Theater” will be coming to two Dayton-area big screens in “RiffTrax Live: Plan 9 from Outer Space.”
The Cinemark Miami Valley Cinema 6, 1020 Garbry Road in Piqua, and Regal Hollywood Stadium 20, 2651 Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek, will host the event Thursday, Aug. 20.
The film — shot live from Belcourt Theater in Nashville, Tenn. — will be broadcast in 430 movie theaters nationwide. Stars from “Mystery Science Theater 3000” will be riffing on “Plan 9 from Outer Space,” a 1959 science fiction/horror film described as the “worst movie ever made.”
The event will reunite Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy (the voice of Tom Servo) and Bill Corbett (the voice of Crow T. Robot), all former stars of the television show, which aired from 1988 to 1999.
If you’ve never seen the show, each episode featured the trio trapped aboard a spaceship and forced to watch horrible movies. However, the movies quickly go from plain bad to plain entertaining with the trio’s hilarious commentary.
In 2006, Nelson launched RiffTrax.com, a site that sells audio commentaries riffing on films in the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000, written by and featuring Nelson and other comedians.
The event is for one night only and will be broadcast at 8 p.m. Tickets will be available at participating theaters and online at www.fathomevents.com.
