KETTERING — When Richard Marx takes the stage at Fraze Pavilion on Sunday, Aug. 15, he’ll give fans a chance to relive some of their memories.
Marx, who had hits throughout the ’80s and ’90s, said it’s hard to hear himself called a “retro” artist because he still feels like a 23-year-old just starting his career.
Marx loves giving fans a musical glimpse of their past, whether “Endless Summer Nights” reminds them of a night at summer camp or “Hold On to the Night” recalls their prom.
“If you’re lucky enough, you get to write those songs for your own selfish purposes and they get adopted into their lives,” he said. “People want to hear you sing songs in front of them.”
Marx is the headliner for the 13th annual Celebrity Concert for Charity, which benefits cystic fibrosis research and assists those living with the disease.
From 1987-1990, Marx had a string of seven singles in Billboard’s Top Five. Songs included “Don’t Mean Nothing,” “Right Here Waiting” and “Satisfied.” Marx still tours, but is also a prolific, award-winning songwriter.
He won a Song of the Year Grammy in 2004 for Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father.” He’s also written “Better Life” and “Everybody” for Keith Urban.
Marx has performed at the Fraze before and enjoys the venue, saying it’s a lot like another outdoor venue near his home in Chicago.
“It was a total blast,” Marx said of previous gigs at the Fraze. “It’s just one of my favorite places to play.”
