Add some music and a big stage to your weekend worship plans

Grammy Award-winning Christian artist Chris Tomlin has been touring for more than two decades. He decided to shake things up in 2017 with his Worship Night in America Tour, which stops at the Nutter Center in Fairborn on Sunday, April 15. The concert features Tomlin and his band on stage with special guests Kim Walker-Smith of Jesus Culture, Matt Maher, Christine D’Clario, Tauren Wells and Pat Barrett.

A week before the 2018 leg of the tour launched, Tomlin took time to answer some questions about Worship Night in America.

What’s the concept of this tour?

“The idea was to do this together with my friends where it isn’t just one artist after the next. All of the artists will be performing together with my band. These are people who are worship leaders or are writing songs that are really strong with the church. It’s a night of unity, and I thought there would be a lot of power in that. We did this last year, and we’re doing it again this year.”

How do you fuse that into a cohesive show?

“It’s about finding the people who have the same kind of heart. We’re all excited about this because it’s so different. It’s not like any other tour I’ve ever seen with all of us together for the whole night. All of them could do a whole night by themselves but they all understand that all of us doing our part make it a better thing. Everybody has the same outlook and humility about them so it has been beautiful. Everybody has been receptive to suggestions as long as it makes things work great. That’s really unique and that makes me grateful for the artists I’ll be traveling with.”

With all the number one singles and awards, do you feel pressure to top all of your previous work when you go in to make a new album?

“You know, there is always the pressure of doing something great, but I do the very best I can. I pray for the right songs to touch people’s hearts. At the end of the day, I want songs the church can sing and are accessible to the church worldwide. When I say the church, I mean all kinds, from the most conservative to the most crazy. I want to find songs that will help people and kind of become the soundtrack to their life with God. That’s what I’m always praying for, and I’m going to continue to work as hard as I can at that.”
