You started GPE Records last year. Why launch your own label?
In life, when things can’t come at the time you want them to, you never stop that dream so we decided to do my own label. It’s going really well. I’ve done the jazz album, “Bel Hommage,” and the Christmas album, “Home for the Holiday with Friends.” We’re also releasing “Fatherless Child” by Jamar Jones this month.
Jamar produced your last two albums. What attracted you to him?
He’s a genius in so many areas of music. His mind is just on top and his piano playing is some of the best I’ve ever heard in my life. It’s great to see someone who influences others with his music and that’s who Jamar is. Now, it’s his time to shine.
What’s next musically?
I’m working on an R&B album, a dance album and a gospel album. It’s nice because I can take my time. I’m not under a clock, I’m on top of the clock, so whenever I’m done is OK.
Food is a big part of your career. What first inspired that?
As a kid, my mother and father, and the lady who lived with us, Naomi, were all excellent cooks. I stayed in the kitchen and followed their lead. I love hot sauce. I carry it in my purse so that’s the first thing I ever made. I went to the garage and had some catsup, black pepper and anything else spicy and I made my first hot sauce.
How’s the acting going?
Really well — I’ve done five episodes of the Oprah Winfrey show “Greenleaf” on OWN. At the end of July I’m going back to film some more episodes for my role as Queen Latifah’s mother on “Star.” I’m just doing whatever comes to me that’s positive and productive. I’m not turning down anything unless it’s crap.
What can folks expect from the concert at the Rose?
At 74, I’m doing the show like I’m 30 years young. I haven’t changed anything except the song selection. It’s still 100 percent Patti.
