Devilish meal to be served with a movie at Dayton landmark

New movie series at Dayton Engineers Club to pair a ‘classic’ film with small plates and signature drinks.

Split peas will be on the big screen and the plate during the launch of a new event series at one of Dayton’s most cherished landmarks.

Dayton Dinner Theater Picture Show will screen its first film, "The Exorcist," at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Dayton Engineers Club, 110 E. Monument Ave., organizers say.

The gourmet meal planned for the event is as wicked as the demon possessing Linda Blair’s character in the 1973 film:  deviled eggs, split pea hummus, communion wafers and cheese, communion grape juice, devil’s food cake and Greek-themed snacks.

Admission is $29.50 at daytondinnertheater.com  and includes the movie and the meal.

Themed adult beverages at the cash bar will include a Holy Water cocktail and red wine.

Old-school movie theater candies like ZERO and Marathon candy bars, Lemonheads and Chuckles will be sold for an additional cost.

Dayton Dinner Theater Picture Show founder John Boucuvalas, a movie buff, said the films featured in the series will be classics.

“The definition of ‘classic’ is open to interpretation,” Boucuvalas said. “A classic to me is ‘Caddyshack.’ A classic to my mother is ‘Gone With the Wind’.”

The movie and dinner parties will be held twice a month beginning at 6 p.m.

Upcoming movies include “The Godfather,” “Caddyshack,” “Casablanca,” “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation” and “It's a Wonderful Life.”

With its history and allure, Dayton Dinner Theater Picture Show founder John Boucuvalas said the Engineers Club seemed to be a great setting for his concept.

“I noticed they were not using their auditorium very much.  They have a great chef (Laura Cotton) on site,” Boucuvalas, a former educator and owner of Dayton Outdoor Weddings, said. “This is open to the public. This allows people to appreciate the elegance and history of the Engineers’ Club.”

The private club was founded by Colonel Edward A. Deeds and Charles F. Kettering in 1914.

Heavy appetizers will be served first from food stations and then the screening will include an intermission.

Boucuvalas said he drew partly from parties his sister use to have, and on his experiences as a University of Dayton student in the early 1990s, when coming up with the concept.

“It was OK to interact. It was more of a shared experience than an isolated experience,” he said.

Dayton Engineers Club will have an interactive vibe, he said, noting that there will be a screen for live Tweets and trivia.

Boucuvalas purchased an applause sign and a “line button” that would pause the movie and encourage audience members to say the next line.

A projector, sound system and screen have been purchased for the business.

The theater has a red curtain. A photo booth and red carpet will be set up, Boucuvalas said.

The company’s name pays homage to the “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” but will be far less messy.
