Dinosaurs, space and wizarding science on tap as Boonshoft Museum of Discovery Summer STEM camps return in July

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery reopened Tuesday, June 16 after closing in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Some hands-on exhibits, the climbing tower and water table have been modified or removed but rarely seen historical artifacts have been added to the displays. Astronomy, zoo keeping and wizarding science will return on site next month at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery.

The Stem Summer Camps, designed for ages four to 14, begin Monday, July 6.

Each camp will be limited to nine participants due to state guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic.

The programs, which also include race-car building and learning what it takes to go to the moon, will use outdoor spaces, according to a museum release. When indoors the camps will take place in different parts of the museum to maintain physical distancing.

Museum staff will wear masks and the participants are also encouraged to wear masks.

Jr. Scientists: Build, Create, Move 

9 student maximum

Jr. Scientists: Coasters, Cars, and Collisions

Learn the ins and outs of your favorite amusement park rides. Test your race car building skills! Push the limits of all your designs, set records, and build your own amusement park or racetrack while learning the physics and feats of engineering used to make these amazing rides and vehicles a reality.

STEM Camp: Zookeeping 101

Are you dreaming of a future career as a Zoo Keeper? This newly expanded full-day experience includes special opportunities like dissection and behavioral observations. Participants will learn about general biology, nutrition, medicine, behavioral training, and exhibit design. The best part: each camper receives hands-on opportunities with the animals.

Join us on a weeklong adventure as we travel straight to the moon. More than 50 years after the original landing on the moon, you will learn the science of how the first astronauts were able to make the trip. You will explore the stars, learn what it takes to be an astronaut, and ultimately step foot on the moon

Jr. Scientists: Gotta Catch'em All

Did you know many of your favorite Pokémon characters are based on science? Everyday take a look at two of your favorite Pokémon characters from the Red/Blue/Yellow series such as Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Pikachu. At the end of camp create your very own Pokémon to show off to your friends and family. It will be a shocking good time!

STEM Camp: Your Turn! The Board Game Camp 

8:30 a.m – 3:30 p.m.

In this camp students will learn the different styles of board games. It takes math, logic, and clever strategy to design the best board game. By the end of the week students will have built their own board game to take home!

STEM Adventure: Urban Astronomy 

9 student maximum

8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Is your child interested in astronomy, but you live in the city? It turns out that there are plenty of ways to observe the sky despite light pollution. We will explore observing targets for both naked eye and binoculars: planets and the moon; bright stars and constellations; atmospheric phenomena like rainbows and sundogs; artificial satellites; and double stars and star clusters. The camp concludes with a stargazing overnight experience at SunWatch Indian Village. There is so much to see, once you know what to look for!

Attention: This camp runs Wednesday, July 22 to Saturday, July 25. Wednesday and Thursday are normal 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. hours. Drop off on Friday is at 8:30 a.m., and campers will be transported to SunWatch Indian Village in the afternoon for the overnight experience. Pickup will be at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, at SunWatch Indian Village, located at 2301 W. River Road in Dayton. Details about overnight items will be sent following registration.

Take a prehistoric adventure in Dinosaur Discovery! Campers open the portal to the past, as they travel to ancient worlds to learn about dinosaurs and other creatures that once inhabited the Earth. Jr. Explorers make their own fossils and come face-to-face with the great beasts that long ago ruled the planet.
