A solo exhibition and book release by Dayton artist Shon Walters will be held at the Fifth Street Gallery Nov. 9.
The show, “reduced to nothing,” will showcase various mediums of Walter’s art including his work with wood sculpting, which he has practiced for nearly 30 years.
"The show will be special for a number reasons, one being that I have taken the entire year off to dedicate myself to making work solely for the act of making art and to share with my community, “ Waters said.
“I will be doing an installation with hope to try to facilitate a experience for the senses. The installation will be a sensation of nature within the shell.”
Walters work can be found nationwide and closer to home. Recent pieces include a wooden tap sculpture made for the Toxic Brew Company in Dayton and a large-scale sculpture of flowers created from a dozen woods including, maple, bamboo yellow heart ash, for the Dayton Metro Library’s branch in New Lebanon.
Walters’ latest body of work, including pieces from a series he’s spent 7 years working on, will be included in the show. Visitors will be able to explore large scale works with video and sound installations.
“The pieces I selected to be in the show are the ones that I have felt would portray an idea of an intimate relationship with nature,” Waters said. “I feel these are visual poems.”
The artist’s book, “The birth, evolution and extinction of the drawer box” is a compilation of images taken during creation of 9 unique drawer-boxes between 2003 and 2015.
The show is a collaboration between Stivers School for the Arts and the Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District.
