Dayton Strong: Cupcake sales go to help mass shooting victims

A little sugar can go a long way.

Twist Cupcakery recently announced the results of its #DaytonStrong cupcake campaign: $771.21 for victims of the Aug. 4 mass shooting.

The small business located at 25 S. St. Clair St. in downtown Dayton sold the specially designed cupcake for nine days following the Aug. 4 mass shooting in the Oregon District.

Kate Rivers, the bakery's owner, said a nine-day period was selected to honor the nine people killed during the shooting.

Police say a 24-year-old Bellbrook man caused more than 30 people to be injured and he shot and killed Logan Turner, Nicholas Cumer, Thomas McNichols, Beatrice Warren-CurtisMonica BrickhouseMegan Betts, Derrick Fudge, Lois Oglesby and Saeed Saleh with a pistol modified to act like a rifle.

The money raised during the special cupcake sale will be donated to the Dayton Foundation, which has established the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund for victims of the mass shooting, Rivers said.

Twist helped provide supplies to those impacted by the 15 Memorial Day tornadoes that hit the Dayton area. Rivers said helping victims of the mass shooting was the right thing to do as well.

“It is our responsibility to help our neighbors when we have the ability to do so,” she said. “I think we would have been remiss to not stand with the community and do our part.”

The #DaytonStrong cupcake is comprised partly of a chocolate Twist Cupcakery cupcake, a chocolate-covered Mikesells potato chip and Esther Price caramel pecan candies.

Rivers said 330 cupcakes were sold at $2.25 with proceeds going to the fund.

The #DaytonStrong cupcake is off the shop’s menu now, but Rivers said it will be sold periodically as a reminder and to support victims.

“We are a strong community and we shall never forget,” she said.
