McGovern said the need is especially critical at the moment and is asking once again for our help.
Ohio is only one of four states in the country that does not mandate insurance coverage for diabetes, she said. Blood sugar test strips are very expensive, with some more than $1 per strip.
“Additionally, with the proposed changes to Medicare Part D, many people may face increased costs for their diabetes medications and supplies, making managing the disease more challenging,” McGovern explained. “We are really in need of diabetes management supplies, particularly, unopened, unexpired test strips.”
When a loved one with diabetes dies or an insurance provider switches them to a new glucometer, often viable management supplies end up either sitting at home expiring, getting thrown away or are sold to people who are advertising that they “buy test strips,” she said.
“When you donate here to Diabetes Dayton, they go directly to those in need,” McGovern said.
Here’s what they need: Diabetes Dayton is in need of unopened, unexpired blood sugar test strips, glucometers, alcohol wipes and syringes. The organization also needs insulin pump supplies — especially for more recent model pumps.
The non-profit organization meets the immediate needs of local people affected by diabetes providing camps for youth, supplies for the uninsured and free, AADE accredited diabetes education classes.
