Every house needs those things that are unique and special and add character. However, if you go to a home decorating store, you can spend $50 and the smallest of shelf fillers or table decorations. For just $8.33, you can easily create a piece that fits your personality, goes with the colors of your space and acts as a conversation piece for your guests.

You will need

Items I purchased:

• Large dog figurine — $3.99 at Goodwill

• Acrylic paint — 35 cents at Hobby Lobby

• High-gloss sealer — $3.99 at Michaels Arts and Crafts

Items I already had:

• Paintbrush

Directions

1. Go to your local thrift store and find a figurine that speaks to you and your personality. You want one that has texture. Being a dog lover, I went with a giant dog figurine that was dated and old looking, but it had some character.

2. Clean the figurine with water to remove any dust that may have collected in the corners or crevices.

3. Using an acrylic paint that matches your decor, apply a coat to your figurine. Let dry and repeat this step. You want the figurine to be completely coated with none of its previous color coming through.

4. Once all your paint has dried, apply a coat of high-gloss sealer to the figurine.

5. Let dry completely, and you have revamped an old decoration to a fun, quirky modern piece that will look great on any shelf or table.
