Back in the days of old, we would window shop, browse catalogs and magazines for our fashion inspiration. As teens we would cut out the looks we love and make dream boards, staple them to walls, mark, tab or rip out pages of things we coveted.
How can you achieve your unique personal style? You can look to the movies or television to help inspire you. Having the confidence to choose and wear what you like can be done by wearing the styles out. You will love owning your look.
Here is how we do it. Online inspiration is in abundance these days. One of the easiest platforms is called Pinterest. It lets you make your own dream boards of things you like, save the picture and link to anything on the internet. We both have our own on Sew Dayton's Pinterest called Tracy and Jesy's Inspiration. Tracy's is packed full of dresses she wants to make and Jesy's is full of everything from workouts, clothing and cute crafts.
Etsy another great one! It is a handmade and vintage marketplace. You can search by look, color, pattern, decade really easily in their search engine. We find independent people usually are the first to make new styles before they become mainstream.
We use Google images, too, to see if anyone else has made what we want to create or purchase. A couple of the new internet platforms we found were Lookbook and Polyvore. They put the put the outfits together for you in a theme and they are so cute although Instagram’s platform will always be our favorite. If you know the name of what you are looking for, simply type out a hashtag in front of it and chances are you will see tons of people that are wearing that garment. Some times they have taken a picture of theirself in your wanted fashion. This helps know what it may look like on you, fit issues and their honest, personal review.
More tips: Remember to choose what you are comfortable wearing. You don’t want a closet full of Lucille Ball-style clothes if you will not let yourself shine. Get an honest friend to help you try looks on and have them take a picture of you in the looks. The camera doesn’t lie! This will help you know if color and style suit you well. Remember your mood can drastically change the way you feel. Pick out things when you are feeling your best!
Have some things you love already, update the styles with alterations if possible. You can change a look and have something new by changing hemlines, taking in suits and removing sleeves. There are so many possibilities out there if you simply use your imagination.
“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, fashion is in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” — Coco Chanel
