A Dayton event has grown into its fitting name, the Urban Yoga Movement.

With roots planted by two Dayton individuals who are known for getting the community flexing and moving, the growing Movement is coming into its fourth year and growing in popularity.

More than a yoga meet-up, the Urban Yoga Movement is a day-long event involving the entire Dayton yoga community. Yoga can be an intimidating practice to take up. Where do you begin? How do you find your "people?" Alex Keller, founder of Alex Keller Yoga, and Tom Helbig, founder of Tomfoolery Outdoors— an outdoor recreation adventure company, met and collaborated at just the right moment to help solve that problem.

Keller and Helbig met during one of Keller’s yoga classes she instructs at Toxic Brewing Company. The pair saw eye-to-eye and began to plan.

"We both believe that Dayton has a lot to offer and wanted to create an event that highlighted Downtown Dayton and the yoga community so we started Urban Yoga Movement, Keller said. "It is a day full of yoga classes taught by instructors from several different studios. We offer two classes at the same time just in different rooms. One is usually a physical practice and the other is either a lecture or meditation."

Guests will enjoy a day of active and educational sessions focused on a variety of disciplines of yoga, meditation and wellness of the mind, body and soul.

Moving around different venues each year, the event has been able to highlight some of Dayton’s hidden gems within the urban areas, Keller said. This year, the event will be hosted at the brand new Brightside Music & Event Venue.

Between all the yogi happenings during the retreat, music, food and a social will add to the ingredients to make it a “transformative” day.
