The latest innovation in sleep technology won't have you counting sheep to try to get some rest – they'll have you slumbering in customized comfort. That's the word on an adjustable mattress, according to a local sleep specialist.

Start with the mattress itself

Just as with a traditional flat foundation sleep set of a stationary mattress and box spring, knowing the size, firmness and comfort level you and your sleep partner, if you have one, prefer in an adjustable mattress, electronically controlled to optimize your sleep comfort, is the first step, Dick Jarrell advises.

"You can actually feel the mattress pushing against the calves of your legs and relaxing those muscles like you would in a high-quality recliner."

All about the base

Often the adjustable base mattresses come in an extra-long twin for motion separation, queen or king size so there's enough length to configure the mattress as desired, via wired or wireless controls.

Attention, side sleepers

With an adjustable base mattress, one is comfortable enough to sleep on one's back, Jarrell advised.

"A traditional flat mattress does not contour to the body correctly," he said.

Raising the headrest at an angle of six to eight inches reduces pressure on the lower spine, he added, enhancing spinal alignment and reducing pressure points. One's sinuses benefit by draining better, too. One may even snore less!

No special linens required

Despite their high-tech nature and capabilities, adjustable base mattresses may be dressed with regular bed linens. Some adjustable base mattresses even fit inside a regular headboard and footboard, Jarrell said.

The mind comes along

When the body is relaxed by resting in the customized comfort offered by an adjustable base mattress, the mind follows along, Jarrell said.

"When it comes to sleep, isn't that what we all want?" he said.
