Concentrate on flooring
Flooring lays the foundation and starts setting the tone for the space. If your decorating budget dictates you must work with existing flooring, layer in a rug.
Choose a sofa or key sitting piece
Pick your key sitting piece – usually a sofa – along with additional seating the room will need. You may want to add accent chairs, ottomans or poufs.
Don't forget your tables
The scale of any table should match the scale of the seating. This might be a good time to add a table behind your sofa; it could double as an impromptu home office space. Think about specialized tables like lift-tops for eating or a chairside table with power strips inside to extend your power needs.
Let there be light
Determine whether the room will need overall lighting, as from a floor lamp. Think about task lighting and/or accent lighting. Lamps are a great way to quickly update a décor.
Layer in personality
Now comes the time when you add your personality with pillows, throws, artwork and tabletop items.
