October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so we’re highlighting those non-profit organizations that focus on cancer prevention and treatment.
Those with cancer — and their caregivers — are being offered a wide variety of wonderful programs through the Western Ohio Cancer Support Community.
“Our mission is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community,” executive director Jeanine Hufford said.
Hufford said all programs offered by her organization are free. Especially important are the free weekly support groups for those in treatment and their caregivers.
Free wigs, brand new from the manufacturer, are also available by appointment.
“We’ve fitted 170 wigs this year,” said Hufford, who says this special program is done in conjunction with the American Cancer Society.
Behind the Red Door at 4801 Hempstead Station Drive in Kettering hundreds of first-time visitors are served each year.
Each month the CSC Program Calendar also includes educational programs that focus on nutrition, food, cooking techniques and healthy choices. All of the cooking instructors volunteer their time and provide the ingredients for the food they prepare.
“CSC participants love our cooking and nutrition programs; they bring fellowship and education together,” Hufford said.
This is where the organization’s wish list comes in.
“The kitchen at CSC is homey, but has a limited selection of cooking utensils and tools,” she explained, adding that one of the presenting chefs recently asked for a wooden spoon and the kitchen didn’t have one.
“The light bulb went off, and we realized that our kitchen is closer to a dorm room than a family home as it relates to utensils,” she said.
The organization is hoping Make a Difference readers will look through their own kitchens and donate items you may no longer need. So many of us have duplicate items in our kitchen drawers and on our shelves.
