Winchester Speedway’s racing season is winding down, but the action continues to heat up.
The historic half-mile, high-banked paved oval plays host to the Old Timer’s Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 21-22.
The two-day show features the USAC sprint cars in the Rich Vogler Classic on Sunday.
Tracy Hines, currently sixth in USAC sprint points, enters as the defending champion. He led the final three laps of the 40-lapper in 2009 after getting past Cole Witt. Hines also posted Winchester’s first-ever qualifying lap under 14 seconds for a nonwing sprint, turning a lap in 13.964 (128.903 mph).
Levi Jones looks to add to his sprint points lead, and help him break a pattern of winning the sprint title in odd numbered years starting with 2005. Jones also finished second in points in 2006 and 2008.
In addition, the vintage cars — many which saw action at the speedway — will be on display from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday. The cars will also run practice laps on Sunday.
The SuperPro Late Model Series and the CRA compacts will also be in action this weekend.
On tap for Winchester are two of its biggest events: The World Stock Car Festival on Sept. 5-6 and the Winchester 400 on Oct. 15-17.
Hot laps
• Before they return to school, the junior drag racers will determine who is at the head of the class at Kil-Kare Dragway. The junior division closes its points season Saturday and all three divisions are up for grabs. Your age-group leaders are Shayla Babb (13-up), Byron Pitts (8-9) and a three-way tie between Kyle Beavers, Marissa Babb and Caleb Ellison (10-12).
• Call it the 4.25-Crown Nationals. USAC and Eldora Speedway are adding the USAC Mopar .25 midgets to the 4-Crown weekend Sept. 24-26. The quarter midgets will run their inaugural show on a new track topside of the pits. A kart track will also host future events.
