Miamisburg’s McIntosh to compete in Mazda racing series

In her pursuit to one day race in the IndyCar Series, Miamisburg native Shannon McIntosh has traded one ’Burg for another.

And this weekend, McIntosh — who adopted St. Peterburg, Fla., as her new hometown — won’t be the only former Miami Valley resident taking on the Streets of St. Petersburg with the Mazda Road To Indy program.

• Camden’s Scott Rettich, 27, will compete along with McIntosh, 22, in the USF2000 Championship series.

• Team Pelfrey — owned by former Daytonian Dale Pelfrey — will open defense of its team championship by fielding three cars in the Star Mazda Series. Pelfrey also sponsors Spencer Pigot in the USF2000 series.

Both series are step-ladder/support series to the IndyCar Series, starting with the USF2000, advancing to the Mazda Series, the Indy Lights and finally the IndyCar Series.

IndyCar opens its season this weekend with the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

“I’m really excited to look ahead to St. Pete and feel it fits my driving style really well,” said McIntosh, who opened her season last weekend by piloting the No. 18 TrueCar-sponsored Pabst Racing Services car to a 15th-place finish in the first race and 23rd in the second race after getting spun out. “My main problem right now is I’m consistently going back to my instinctual habits of overdriving the car because of the style of racing (sprint car) I come from. It’s a matter of breaking those old habits as I work with my driver coach, Mike Zimicki.”

In the USF2000, McIntosh competes in the higher Championship Division and Rettich in the National Division, which prepares drivers for the Championship level.

In last week’s season opener, Rettich finished second (19th overall) and third (16th overall) in the National Division.

Pelfrey, meanwhile, runs his racing team from the St. Pete area after reviving it last season.

He ran the IndyCar Series from 1998-2000.
