'Retarded' not offensive, but can be used in offensive way

Re "Insults led MRDD to change name," Oct. 6: The word "retarded" in itself is not offensive; it's the way that it is spoken. Like so many other words, it sounds degrading.

I think it's up to parents, family members and friends to correct people when they use the word "retard" in an offensive way. Education is key in changing things.
