The issue on November’s ballot represents 40 percent of the libraries’ funding, and, if it fails, we will see the closing of most of the Dayton Metro Library’s branches. What is left will not be able to serve the needs of a community hungry for its services. Let’s not let this happen to Montgomery County or to the city of Dayton. Our economic future is dependent upon strong institutions such as our public library system.
Please support our library on Nov. 3 and vote yes for its future survival.

Libraries provide the most bang for our bucks
Despite the deep state budget cuts, Greene County Public Library Director Karl Colon says, “People tell us, ‘We love the local libraries in Greene, Miami, Montgomery and Warren counties.’ ”
The libraries are providing the most bang for the buck, which Colon further says means staying open for hours most used, and limiting purchases to items used most every day.
“The public is incredibly supportive, and that we’re having to look at cuts and levies at a difficult time in the economy is just heartbreaking.”
All of the local libraries are asking for modest levies on the November ballot to simply maintain or restore services, and that includes extensive programs for kids, especially preschool and elementary school children who are just learning to read. The use of local libraries has dramatically increased in the past five years.
I agree with the position of the Dayton Daily News (“Libraries took hit; now they need you,” Oct. 3), and voters should support local libraries through the ballot issues in their communities.
