Around 12:45 a.m., Dayton police asked for the public’s help locating Ernest Gray.

He was last seen around 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the 4500 block of Saint Johns Avenue. Gray had dementia, according to police.

Police released an update saying Gray had been located around 7:45 a.m. The department confirmed he was killed in a pedestrian strike early Friday afternoon.

“Tragically, he was the pedestrian who was struck and killed in a crash this morning in the area of state Route 49 and West Third Street in Trotwood,” a statement read.

Around 4:50 a.m., Montgomery County Regional Dispatch received a report of a male who was hit and not responding near Ohio 49 and West Third Street.

The driver called 911 and said they didn’t see the male coming, according to dispatch records.

“This guy ran right out in front of us and I hit him,” the caller said.

They told dispatch they didn’t think he was breathing.

An investigator from the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office confirmed they were called to respond.
