Get rid of unused drugs Saturday for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The Drug Enforcement Administration encourages everyone to clean out their medicine cabinet of prescription medication they do not need and give it to local collection sites where it can be disposed of safely.

In 2019, 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers, 4.9 million people misused prescription stimulants and 5.9 million people misused prescription tranquilizers or sedatives. Most of the misused drugs were obtained through family and friends, often from a home medicine cabinet, the DEA reported.

Local law enforcement offices have posted several collection sites for Drug Takeback Day, which will last from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Those interested can find their local collection site on the DEA’s National Take Back Initiative Collection website.

The Dayton Police Department encourages Ohioans to turn in their unused, unwanted or expired prescription medication so they do not become dealers themselves.

They announced they would not take liquids or needles. Greene County locations also will take worn U.S. flags to properly dispose of them, the Facebook post stated.
