An 18-year-old accused of playing with a gun when it fired, hitting and killing another 18-year-old, is charged with reckless homicide.

Matthew Ogburn Jr., of Dayton, was indicted Monday in the July 10 shooting death of Aden Alexander in the basement of a home in the 100 block of Gunckel Avenue in Dayton.

Ogburn was “playing with a loaded pistol” when he shot Alexander, according to a Dayton Municipal Court affidavit. Ogburn then ran from the home, cut off his dreadlocks and changed his clothing after the shooting. Dayton police found him about 15 minutes later, according to court documents.

Ogburn also suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand when he was playing with the gun and it discharged.

He was on house arrest at the time of the shooting and in May had cut off his ankle bracelet. He additionally is charged with having weapons under disability as a fugitive from justice and the reckless homicide charge carries a three-year firearm specification, court records show.

Ogburn’s arraignment is Thursday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court. He remains held on $1 million bond in the Montgomery County Jail.
