Russ White, director of real estate for ALDI’s Springfield division, said the existing ALDI store in the Northmont Plaza will close its doors when the new free-standing store opens, which is scheduled to happen before the end of May.
The new ALDI store will be more than 18,000 square feet, with wider aisles and a more modern layout than the existing store, which is more than 20 years old, White said. The number of employees is expected to rise after the store’s relocation,White said. The Northmont Plaza ALDI employs 10 to 12.
The Englewood project continues ALDI’s growing investment in the Dayton-area market. Earlier this year, the grocery chain gutted and substantially renovated its Kettering and Huber Heights locations, and is currently “looking for opportunities” in markets such as Beavercreek and Xenia to add new stores in the region, White said.
William Singer, Englewood’s director of community and economic development, said the former Englewood Truck retail project is key to the synergy that is underway along Main Street, especially near I-70, where a Starbucks and Panera Bread are building new locations south of the interchange. A nearby Meijer store recently underwent a multi-million dollar makeover.
City officials say the tract is a prime target for re-development, and in February, Englewood City Council changing the zoning for the land to accommodate a developer’s plan to bring in national retailers at the site.
