August restaurant news: 9 coming soon, 4 new, 1 closed

August saw a number of announcements of new restaurants and bars coming to the area.

New

Au Bon Pain

The bakery-café chain Au Bon Pain, located within Kennedy Union on the University of Dayton’s campus, opened on Aug. 21. The chain, which is open to the public, offers breakfast and lunch items such as fresh-baked pastries, gourmet coffee, soup, sandwiches, mac & cheese and made-to-order salads, according to UD officials.

The new owner of Riff Raff Tavern, Grant Dixon, has renamed the bar and music venue Club Evolution. The nightclub, located at 130 N. Patterson Blvd., will offer a food-service operation called The Bistro at Evolution, which will be operational in early September.

Heavier than Air Brewing Co. opened its doors on Aug. 26 in the Normandy Square Shopping Center off of Miamisburg-Centerville Road (Ohio 725). The aviation-themed brewery will primarily serve other local breweries’ offerings as it ramps up its own brewing operations.

On Aug. 15, the Kettering-based Rapid Fired Pizza opened its 19th location near the Eastgate Mall in Cincinnati. The 2,300-square-foot restaurant near the Jungle Jim’s International Market will seat up to 66, and will be owned and operated by franchises Zach and Beck Renfrow.

The area’s first Fuzzy’s Taco Shop has plans to open for business late this fall at The Greene. The Texas-based Mexican restaurant will employ about 35 and will occupy a 3,871-square-foot space next to Mattress Firm.

Jubie’s Creamery, an independent ice cream shop, is in the works at 471 W. Dayton- Yellow Springs Road. Julie Domicone, who graduated in May with a business degree from the Ohio State University, said she plans to open the shop next spring.

Vandalia-based Hairless Hare Brewery plans to open its second location at a former Fairborn firehouse, located at 29 N. Broad St. “The Hairless Hare Olde Firehouse Brewery” will have a taproom and kitchen upstairs with the brewery on the first floor. The business will seat an estimated 100 and has plan to open as early as spring 2018.

IHOP will open its newest location at 7611 Old Troy Pike on Sept. 5 at 6 a.m. The restaurant will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will seat 192 and employ nearly 110. IHOP has another restaurant under construction in Vandalia near the Miller Lane restaurant with plans to open as early as March.

Lock 27’s second location will debut on Sept. 5 at East Monument Avenue and will share a plaza with Fifth Third Field, overlooking the Dayton Dragon’s stadium. The 12,00-square-foot restaurant and brewery will seat about 120, and will serve lunch and dinner seven days a week, according to owner Steve Barnhart.

The area’s second MOD pizza is now hiring and will open its doors on Sept. 13. The quick-serve casual pizza restaurant, located within Cornerstone of Centerville, will occupy 2,800 square feet and will serve individual pizzas, made-to-order salads, milkshakes, house-made lemonades and ice teas, and local craft beers and wine.

Atlanta-based McAlister’s Deli is opening its third local restaurant within The Village At Dayton Mall, which also houses Bravo and Rusty Bucket. The 4,000-square-foot-space will seat 158 and will serve sandwiches, soups, salads, Spuds, (loaded baked potatoes), desserts and sweet tea.

The former site of Max & Erma’s in Beavercreek is now home to MacKenzie River Pizza Grill Pub, which is planned to open Oct. 2. The restaurant “is all about fresh ingredients, scratch kitchens, creative cocktails, and a diverse beer section in our casual rustic Montana atmosphere that depicts the heart and soul of the Rocky Mountains,” James Blystone, Glacier’s vice president of franchising and communication, told this news outlet in April.

The Seattle-based company plans to start construction on one of the area’s largest Starbucks beginning the second week of September. The 3,400-square-foot space, located at 919 Lyons Road at Ohio 725, will offer customers a drive-through service, two patios, one seating 30 and another seating 12, in addition to interior seating for 50, according to a site plan filed earlier this year with Washington Twp. officials.

On Aug. 15, The Dayton Beer Company shut down its original taproom, 912 E. Dorothy Lane in Kettering, to consolidate brewing operations at its larger and newer downtown Dayton facility. The Kettering location opened in May 2012 and had a 20-seat taproom and patio, which were both renovated in early 2016.
