Caught in the Path of a Tornado
- Leave your car, seek shelter in a sturdy building
- Never try to outrun a tornado. Your vehicle offers no protection
- Seek shelter indoors, preferably a basement, or closet and small interior rooms. Stay away from walls, windows. Do not seek shelter in a mobile home
- If you are out in the open, find a ditch, ravine or low-lying area and lie flat.

- Check for injuries. Do not move seriously injured persons unless they are in immediate danger
- Drive only if necessary and avoid flooded roads and washed-out bridges. Be on the lookout for fallen objects and downed electrical wires.
- Check your house for structural damage, loose power lines, gas leaks and other damage.
- Stay out of any building if you smell natural gas.
- When dark, use battery-powered flashlights instead of candles;
- Avoid drinking or preparing food with tap water until you are sure it's not contaminated;
- Check refrigerator for spoiled food. When in doubt, throw it out;
- When cleaning, be cautious and wear protective clothing.
