West Dayton ALDI’s to close Sunday

ALDI’s in the Westown Shopping Center is closing its doors on Sunday, which will be its last day of sales.

The discount grocery store announced the store’s closure in December, which drew harsh criticism from some community members who contend the decision will exacerbate food deserts in West Dayton.

ALDI’s still operates stores in Englewood, West Carrollton and Kettering, and the West Dayton store is handing out coupons to encourage customers to patronize the other locations.

In a statement, ALDI said it recognizes that the store closure will affect some of its loyal customers.

But the company said it will continue to offer “high-quality, affordable groceries” at three nearby stores.

ALDI’s said that all of its employees can transfer to a nearby ALDI store so there will be no lob losses.

“We take the closing of the West Dayton ALDI store very seriously, and the decision to close on April 15 was based on many metrics we use to evaluate our stores,” the company said. “We have been proud to serve residents near our West Dayton store over the last 20 years.”

ALDI’s closure was one piece of bad news for West Dayton residents in recent months. Premier Health earlier this year announced that Good Sam Hospital would close at the end of August.
