Broken Pipe Closes Flooded Miami County Safety Building

A steam pipe broke in a second-floor probate court room in the Miami County Safety Building in Troy over the weekend, leaving up to 4 inches of water in numerous offices in the basement, and on the first and second floors.

The water was discovered Sunday morning by an employee of the county prosecutor's office. She was in the Safety Building Saturday night at 9 p.m. and said all was well. Twelve hours later the problem was discovered.

Meeting in an emergency session Sunday afternoon, the Miami County Commissioners voted to close the Safety Building for Monday as work is under way to remove the water and access the electric, computers and paper files.

County Commission President Ron Widener said they will determine on Monday when to reopen the building for county business.

The Miami County Sheriff's Department and jail and the old Miami County Courthouse across the plaza are not affected by the closing, where it will be business as usual on Monday.
