Crash, car explosion claims 1

One person died Monday morning after a car crashed into a tree and exploded.

Just after 6 a.m., emergency crews responded to the 600 block of Grants Trail after neighbors reported hearing a car explode and seeing a body on the ground nearby.

Officials said the driver of the car missed a curve on Grants Trail, and the car fell into the grass, fell sideways and struck a tree. The car split in two, and the 21-year-old passenger was ejected.

The gas tank ruptured in the crash and the car caught fire, and the 21-year-old driver and neighbor pulled the passenger further away from the vehicle before the explosion, officials said.

The passenger, who’s identity has not been released, died at the scene. The driver was taken to Miami Valley Hospital and is listed in stable condition.

Officials believe the driver and passenger are both from the area, and that the driver was taking the passenger home.

Alcohol and high speed are both suspected in the crash.
