UPDATE @ 3:55 a.m.:

A vehicle involved in a reported carjacking in Dayton Monday night was involved in a police pursuit and crash in Shelby County on Tuesday morning.

Shelby County Sheriff Lt. Tim Bender said a deputy was engaged in a brief pursuit after spotting a vehicle driving with no taillights on Michigan Avenue in Sidney shortly after midnight Tuesday.

Bender said the chase only lasted about a quarter mile on North Vandemark Road before the Volkswagen Passat crashed. Two men inside the vehicle fled the scene, but one of the men was caught right away.

Deputies believed the other man was possibly armed, and requested assistance from Sidney police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol. State troopers also used a helicopter to search for the man by air, but both the ground and air search for the man were unsuccessful.

Bender said the vehicle was involved in a ‘violent crime’ in Dayton, but he would not specify the nature of the crime.

The license plate of the Volkswagen Passat observed by our crew at the scene in Sidney, also matched the plate of a car involved in a reported carjacking in Dayton late Monday night.

Reports indicate the car was taken at gunpoint by four men near the intersection of Germantown Street and Gettysburg Avenue in Dayton around 11 p.m.

The name of the suspect arrested in Sidney was not immediately available.

Deputies are continuing to search for the suspect who is still at large.

FIRST REPORT

Deputies and officers in Shelby County have arrested one man and are looking for another who fled following a chase and crash.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said they were involved a brief pursuit that ended with the vehicle crashing near the intersection of North Vandemark and West Russell roads, just outside of Sidney.

Sidney police have also been requested to assist and told our crew that one man is in custody following the incident, and another man fled the scene and is still on the loose. Police believe he is possibly armed.

A law enforcement helicopter has been requested and is flying in the area attempting to locate the man.

Reports indicate that the vehicle involved was a stolen car from Dayton.

Our crew is on the scene and we’ll update this story as new information becomes available.
