A caller to 911 told a dispatcher that Hoover knocked on her door looking for help and saying he’d been kidnapped.
“I was asleep on my couch and some kid is at my front door,” she reported. “I don’t want to open it. He said somebody is after him and he needs help,” she said.
According to the 911 call obtained by WCPO, Hoover claimed he’d popped the trunk and fought off three males.
911 caller: I was just asleep on my couch and some boy is at my front door and I don’t want to open it. He says someone is after him.
…
Dispatcher: Does he look like he needs an ambulance?
911 caller: No, he’s just crying really bad. It doesn’t look like he’s been harmed or anything.
…
Dispatcher: Can you ask him where the people are that tried to hurt him?
[woman asks Hoover, he can be heard in the background]
Hoover: They’ve been driving up and down this road. I’ve been hiding.
…
[The caller later hands the phone to Hoover]
Dispatcher: We have several officers with your family. We have several coming to help you. Do you remember anything about the car or the people?
Hoover: I really don’t. I think it was three males.
Dispatcher: Did they sound like they were white or black?
Hoover: I think they were black but there was only one guy in the car. He had a gun to my stomach the whole way and told me to drive home.
Hoover was taken to sheriff’s headquarters to talk investigators. Later, the department announced the charge against him.
His mother posted on his Twitter page a plea recipients of his tweets to delete posts and tags and “give us some time to figure this all out. Adam has helped so many people help me help him.”
Officers told WCPO that Hoover was going to be taken to a local hospital to undergo a mental evaluation.
Hoover was released to a relative about 6:30 a.m. and will be cited into court at a future date, according to Michael Robison, spokesman for the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
Police said they remain unsure why Hoover faked his own kidnapping. “It would be unfair to speculate why he did it because I don’t have those answers right now,” said Green Township police Sgt. Jim Vetter.
