Fatal shooting victim also was shot four months ago

33-year-old Springfield man gunned down near home

A 33-year-old man fatally shot Sunday near his home was the same man who in March survived a gunshot wound before seeking help at a Springfield McDonald’s.

William Douglas Haney was identified as the man who was killed around 2 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Sturgeon Street, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

His death marked the fifth homicide in the city this year.

Springfield police chief Stephen Moody said the incident began as an argument between Haney and another man. Neighbors were not in danger even though the shooter, who fled in a car, remained at large, the chief said.

“We’ve been busy this weekend, as you might expect (due to the Independence Day holiday),” Moody said. “A lot of people have been off work, but it’s been rather peaceful.

“This was unfortunate. It was a tragedy for this young man’s family. They’re good folks, they’re good people. This is a good neighborhood. It’s just something that got out of hand.”

Police recovered several shell casings along Sturgeon Street. Haney’s body was found in back of a home, but it was not clear whether he was found behind his residence.

Haney was previously shot on March 11 while he and 19-year-old DaShawn Leinasars, also of Springfield, were inside a white sport-utility vehicle in the 2000 block of Clifton Street.

The shooters, who used high-powered assault rifles, barely missed striking a young girl inside a house when gunfire erupted, police said.

Haney was hit by a bullet that struck his spinal cord, police said at the time. He and Leinasars, who took a bullet to his chest that punctured a lung, drove to a nearby McDonald’s restaurant on South Limestone Street to get help.

Both were able to recover after they were taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center and then transferred to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

No one has been arrested in the March shooting.

Police as of Sunday night had not released suspect information or a vehicle description from the afternoon shooting.
