“This comes down to a situation of the younger Mr. Green taking advantage of the older Mr. Green to feed his heroin addiction and things came to a head,” Fornshell said after Freddie Green’s arraignment.
It was the sixth deadly domestic violence incident since July and one of an apparent record number of homicides in Warren County in 2016, Fornshell said.
Annual data was unavailable Wednesday, but Fornshell said, “Nobody can remember having this many homicides in the same year. That’s obviously not a statistic we’re happy about.”
Green, 42, indicted on two counts of murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Sidney Green, will be held on $1 million bond.
Latest case of deadly domestic violence
Green called 911 to report shooting his father in a bedroom of their home on Oxford Drive.
"I took it from him. I fired and I shot him," Green said in a 911 call reporting the incident. "I took the gun from him. He said something about grabbing another gun, so I fired."
On Wednesday, Fornshell for the first time offered a different version of the incident.
“We don’t believe his explanation,” Fornshell said. “We believe that 911 call was made several hours after he had killed Mr. Green.”
Fornshell declined to elaborate on how prosecutors determined Green had delayed the 911 call or had been taking advantage of his father financially.
Fornshell discussed the case after Magistrate Andrew Hasselbach set the bond during Green’s arraignment Wednesday in Warren County Common Pleas Court.
Hasselbach also appointed lawyer Jeffery Richards to represent Green, who was also indicted on two counts of felonious assault.
Sidney Green was shot once in the head, according to the Warren County Coroner’s Office.
Fornshell acknowledged the Green case was part of a spike in fatal domestic violence incidents.
Mercedes Robb, 35, remains in the county jail on $1 million bond, accused of murdering her ex-husband, Jason Robb, 35, as he arrived to pick up their children for school in November in Turtlecreek Twp., outside Lebanon.
David Garrett, 39, and Traci-Fletcher Garrett, 41, died in a homicide-suicide in Hamilton Twp., outside Morrow in September and Eric Walker, 33, and Lauren Walker, 32, were killed in a homicide-suicide in July in Clearcreek Twp., outside Springboro.
“Domestic violence is a huge issue in every community,” Fornshell said.
Fornshell pointed out the bulk of the cases resulted from domestic disputes, rather than random shootings, car jackings or break-ins that could indicate Warren County was becoming a dangerous place.
Warren County wasn’t dangerous, he said, “not if you trust your family.”
