Memorial honors teen struck, killed

West Carrollton teen hit by vehicle earlier this week in Miamisburg

UPDATE @ 9:50 p.m.

Family and friends of Korina Ventura, the 14-year-old West Carrollton girl struck and killed on her bicycle earlier this week, plan to erect a big cross with her name on it as a memorial Thursday night, said her mother, April Newton.

The memorial will be at the accident site, on North Main near Richard Street. The cross will go up at exactly 8:50 p.m., the time Newton said her daughter was hit Tuesday night. The crash happened five minutes after their phone call, when Korina called to say “I’m on my way home. I love you, bye,” her mother said.

Earlier Tuesday, Korina completed freshmen orientation at West Carrollton High School, Newton said.

Graveside funeral services are planned for 1 p.m. Monday at Evergreen Cemetery, 401 N. Miami Ave., West Carrollton.

Classes start Tuesday, when the high school will have counselors available.

Newton said her daughter had friends in West Carrollton, Miamisburg, Moraine and Kettering, and that she is planning the memorial for Thursday night mainly with them in mind as a way to channel their grief.

“She had so many friends … popular girl, beautiful girl,” Newton said.
