State troopers attempted to stop a Sidney man before he died in a single-vehicle motorcycle accident early Sunday morning in Logan County.
Troopers were dispatched around 2:20 a.m. Sunday to Ohio 47 in Harrison Township on a reported crash involving a motorcycle, according to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol,
Brett Metz, 27, of Sidney was traveling west on Ohio 47 when his motorcycle went off the roadway striking a ditch and a fence post. Metz was ejected from the motorcycle and was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers attempted to stop the motorcycle in the Bellefontaine city limits for speeding, but the rider didn’t stop and accelerated away from the patrol car. As the motorcyclist fled out of sight, the trooper decided not to pursue the vehicle, said OSP Spokesman Craig Svetan. The attempted stop was about three miles ahead of the site of the crash, he said.
Excess speed is believed to be a factor in the crash. Metz was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to troopers. The motorcyclist will be tested alcohol and drugs, but it’s not believed he was under the influence, Svetan said.
The incident remains under investigation by the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Svetan said.
