Police ID man who was shot to death in Dayton

A 54-year-old man was shot to death in Dayton on Monday afternoon outside an apartment complex during what police believe may have been a drug deal gone bad.

The victim's name is Randy Tillman, of Delhi Drive in Dayton.

A Dayton police sergeant says a preliminary investigation reveals that Tillman was in a small silver sedan when he was hit at least once in the chest by gunfire.

Tillman crashed into a fence in the parking lot of an apartment complex along Burwood Avenue, near Haberer Avenue. Police towed that car as evidence.

There was a woman in the car, who was not hit by gunfire, the sergeant says. She was detained by investigators for questioning. Her name, age and relationship to the victim were not released.

Police say the neighborhood is a high-crime area and believe the shooting may have occurred during a drug transaction. The sergeant tells News Center 7's Kate Bartley that investigators believe the victim was in the neighborhood to buy drugs.

The call about the shooting came in to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch at about 3:30 p.m.

This is the fourth homicide of the year in Dayton.
