The body of Michael Nevins, 36, was discovered shortly after midnight inside a SUV parked behind a house at 44 E. Siebenthaler. He had been shot numerous times and pronounced dead at the scene.
“Our strongest suspicion is a retaliatory shooting because of past criminal activity,” Homicide Sgt. Gary White said.
Montgomery County Common Pleas court records show that Nevins was convicted of killing 16-year-old Delaquon Brown. Nevins served four years in prison for the crime that took place in July 2004, White said. The sergeant also said Nevins had connections to the drug trade.
Just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, a man described by Lt. Welsh as a close friend of Nevins was shot outside the A&M Meats store, 1609 Gilsey Ave. The victim was taken to Miami Valley Hospital with gunshot wounds to a leg.
Welsh said the victim was not a suspect in the Nevins’ homicide. Sgt. White said the victim declined to give police a description of his assailant. White said the public has provided police with numerous tips on the Nevins’ slaying.
Police said there was a gathering for Nevins around the time of the second shooting next door to the meat market, which also played a central role in the 2004 slaying of Brown. Prior to that shooting, Brown, Nevins and several others had gotten into a confrontation at Gilsey Market, which is now A&M Meats.
